  2.   1. INSTALLING ECON.   
  3.      
  4.      Insert the Installation disk in disk drive A: or B:
  5.      Type:  a:install   (or b:install)
  6.      You will see the following screen:

  19.   You will need about 1 megabyte of free disk space to install econ.

  21.   If you obtained a PKZIP version from a bulletin board, simply PKUNZIP
  22.   the files to your chosen directory.  There is no installation routine
  23.   for the BBS version.

  26.   2. RUNNING THE PROGRAM
  27.  
  28.            1.  Boot up in MS-DOS
  29.            2.  Change directory to the \econ directory
  30.            (cd \econ)
  31.            3.  Type: ECON   (and press Enter)
  32.            4.  The program will load, and the shareware
  33.            message will come up.  Hit any key and the main
  34.            menu will appear.

  37.    3. IF ECON WON'T RUN
  38.  
  39. You need 640K memory and DOS 3.3 or above.  You can find out how much 
  40. memory you have by typing chkdsk at a DOS prompt.  It will tell you how
  41. much memory you have and how many bytes are free.  You need 640K (655360)
  42. total memory and at least 512K (524288) free.
  43.  
  44. Note to Windows PIF users:
  45. If you set Econ up in Windows using the PIF editor, be sure use full
  46. screen, not windowed.  Set it up using File, New, New Program Object
  47. from the Windows menu and this will not be a problem.

  49. If you get Error 4: Too many files open:
  50. Edit your config.sys file in your root directory.
  51. cd \
  52. edit config.sys
  53. Find the line that says "FILES=10" or files=anything.
  54. Change it to "FILES=30"
  55.  
  56. About the program:
  57.  
  58. Econ forecasts S&P 500, T bond and T bill interest rates, zero coupon
  59. bonds, gold prices, and inflation using econometric models derived by
  60. multiple linear regression.
  61.  
  62. Once a month you enter 9 numbers and get statistically optimized
  63. forecasts for 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months in the future.
  64. The program has a full help facility by simply pressing the F1 key.
  65.  
  66. There is also an asset allocation routine which tells you how much of
  67. each asset to hold with conservative and aggressive strategies.  It's
  68. a menu driven, mouse active program which runs on IBM-PC and compatibles,
  69. 640K memory and a hard drive are needed and a VGA monitor is recommended.

  71. This software is copyrighted by DC Econometrics and all rights are
  72. reserved.  The file econ.txt is a lengthy manual, this readme.txt file
  73. is a short version to get you started fast.  Data must be entered
  74. monthly.  It is likely that your data files are not current on this
  75. disk.  When you register for $49.95 you will receive a new disk with
  76. current data files and a printed manual.
